Plate Bearing tests were undertaken to allow us to report on the California Bearing Ratio and the settlement of subsoils below a proposed pavement. An hydraulic ram was used to apply ground pressure via a circular steel plate, with a wheeled excavator used to react against. The pressure required to achieve defined settlement increments was recorded with a calibrated load cell, with dial gauges used to measure the small settlements. The tests were carried out to BS1377-9.
