OSC were engaged to investigate the condition of a timber framed bandstand in Forbury Gardens, Reading.
Our investigation established that one of the eight timber columns had been crudely repaired in the past by splicing in a section of softwood to replace the lower portion of the column.
Samples extracted from the original timber were analysed to identify the species of timber to enable a suitable replacement timber to be specified within the remedial design.
Our design called for a European White Oak to be turned to match the profile of the portion of column to be replaced. A carbon fibre dowel was included in the top of the replacement portion and the base was held in position with a steel reinforcing bar resin anchored into the granite plinth.
Slots were cut into the sides of the parent timber and the replacement post base to house the dowelled fixings. On installation the dowels were fixed in place with a structural adhesive.
The mating timber faces were prepared in advance and bonded together with a specialist timber adhesive. The post base was shimmed up on the granite plinth with a timber compatible grout used to grout up beneath the post base.
On completion of the timber replacement, the diagonal iron cross-braces were re-fixed to the repaired post to restore the later
